Why EV Mileage Can Lie
This episode breaks down why odometer readings no longer tell the full story for used EVs, and why battery health now depends on charge habits, heat, and cell balance instead of kilometres alone.
We also explore how independent OBDII battery tests can expose hidden degradation, reduce information asymmetry, and give buyers and sellers real leverage in the secondhand EV market.
Chapter 1
The Odometer Lie and the Blind Spot in Second Hand EVs
VINN
G'day listeners, a topic today that is more an more pressing amongst the so called - "Fuel Crisis" we are all feeling the impact from!
VINN
Standing in that wash bay twenty years ago, I watched and learned that people lie, but the metal in that car - does not. - Or rather, the way a machine has been treated always leaves a physical trace, if you know where to look.
VINN
Back then, you could smell burnt automatic transmission fluid on a dipstick. You could run a finger inside an exhaust pipe and tell if a ring had gone. You could glance down the sill lines and spot where a spray gun had dusted over fresh panel filler. Those physical cues were hard earned, but they gave you a fighting chance against a seller trying to pull a fast one.
VINN
Right now, across Australia and the rest of the automotive world, we are living through the biggest shift in used vehicles since the invention of the odometer. And the uncomfortable truth is that thousands of used car buyers are walking blindfolded into a massive financial blind spot. For over a century, the odometer was treated as the ultimate source of truth. You walk onto a yard, you lean through the window, you see sixty thousand kilometres on the cluster, and in your mind, you feel you understand the life that machine has lived.
VINN
But here is the new issue! - With electric vehicles now, - that odometer number may not tell you about what actually matters!
VINN
Let me lay out a scenario I am seeing play out almost every other week. - Picture two - twenty twenty one Tesla Model 3s - or another two, Hyundai Ioniq 5's sitting side by side on a dealer lot! - or even in private listings across your state!
VINN
Both examples have sixty thousand kilometres on the clock. - On paper, they look identical.- The Same model year, the same paint, the same odometer reading, and a similar asking price.
VINN
Car A spent its life parked under a carport, plugged into a standard home wallbox every second evening, gently charged between twenty and eighty percent, and rarely driven in extreme ambient temperatures.
VINN
But - Car B belonged to someone who relied entirely on public ultra rapid DC chargers, hammering the pack with three hundred and fifty kilowatt bursts in forty degree summer heat, - leaving the state of charge sitting pinned at one hundred percent overnight!
VINN
On the odometer, they are twins. But beneath the floorboards, in the chemical heart of those cars, they are completely different animals. Car A might have ninety five percent of its usable original capacity intact. Car B might be languishing below eighty two percent, with cell degradation and internal resistance that will soon slash its highway range and crater its real world usability. Yet if you simply walk up and trust the odometer, you will treat them as identical assets worth the exact same money.
VINN
And here is what gets under my skin. Most folks assume the dashboard State of Health indicator or the onboard range guess o meter will warn them. It will not. Vehicle manufacturers use closed, proprietary algorithms inside their Battery Management Systems. Their priority is customer reassurance, not radical transparency. They build in software buffers and smooth out degradation curves so that the driver feels confident for the first five or six years. They do not want early warranty claims, and they certainly do not want anxious drivers turning up at service departments asking why their range dipped three percent over winter.
VINN
Think about the sheer cognitive dissonance in our buying habits. In the trade, I have spent two decades watching everyday Australians gladly pay three hundred dollars for a pre purchase mechanical inspection. A mobile mechanic would jack the car up, check a set of worn brake pads worth a hundred bucks, shine a torch on a rocker cover weeping, or find something that may need some sort of - used car - attention - and then the buyer would breathe a sigh of relief.
VINN
Yet today, I'm seeing people happily hand over forty, fifty, or sixty thousand dollars for a pre owned electric car and roll the dice on a fifteen to twenty thousand dollar high voltage traction battery without a single piece of independent verification.
VINN
Global diagnostic data from more than five hundred thousand battery tests reveals a hard truth: battery degradation does not correlate neatly with distance driven. It tracks cycle counts, thermal management stress, deep discharge habits, and individual cell voltage variance.
Chapter 2
Inside the Diagnostic Box Cell Voltages and Mobile Health Checks
VINN
So how do you crack open that black box without pulling the pack out or voiding the manufacturer warranty? That is where certified independent diagnostic technology changes the entire playing field. You do not need to drop the battery tray. Everything you need is accessible right through the vehicle onboard diagnostic port, the OBD two port.
VINN
Specialized platforms like AVILOO have developed diagnostic systems that query the vehicle control units directly, bypassing the sugar coated dashboard displays. For example, mobile testing services across Melbourne, from startups like Melbourne EV testing - are branching into other states due to the demand, and now can bring this technology directly to your driveway, workplace, or dealer forecourt.
VINN
A certified technician plugs in the diagnostic interface, runs the routine in about twenty minutes, and for a flat fee of three hundred and twenty nine dollars, you get an independent, objective certificate delivered digitally that same day.
VINN
Now, what does that report actually reveal that a dealer scan tool or a dashboard readout will never tell you? - First and foremost is a true State of Health as a verified percentage against factory specification, - benchmarked against hundreds of thousands of vehicles. - But even more critical than that overall percentage, is the cell level voltage delta, and the thermal protocol.
VINN
But - Let me break down why individual cell balance is the silent deal breaker in electric cars. - A modern EV battery is not just one big tank of electricity. It is composed of hundreds or even thousands of individual cells arranged into modules.
VINN
Your dashboard might give you a calm, comforting reading saying your battery health is at ninety percent. But what happens if just one or two cells in module three are degraded and dropping voltage faster than all the surrounding cells?
VINN
A battery pack is strictly as strong as its weakest link. When you drive quietly through suburban streets, that voltage imbalance might stay hidden. But the second you step out to overtake a road train on a country highway, or pull a heavy load up an incline on a hot afternoon, the vehicle demands peak current. And under that heavy load, that single weak cell drops its voltage off a cliff.
VINN
The Battery Management System detects that dangerous drop, triggers an emergency limp mode or shuts down power delivery altogether to prevent catastrophic thermal runaway. That is how drivers end up stranded on the side of the road with phantom range loss, despite their dash showing twenty percent battery remaining ten seconds earlier. That is a multi thousand dollar repair you can avoid with twenty minutes of testing before you sign the contract.
VINN
Understanding how these tests work also clarifies why independent third party verification is essential. In the diagnostic space, there are quick stationary evaluations, like the three minute flash test used primarily for rapid - fleet - remarketing and intake processing, which operates with about a plus or minus three percent accuracy window compared to a full discharge cycle test.
VINN
And then there are comprehensive deep assessments that verify real world capacity, temperature sensor variance, and charge acceptance across the entire pack. Having that data certified and verified by independent cryptographic or digital QR systems prevents manipulation and ensures that what is on the paper reflects the true state of the chemistry.
Chapter 3
Leveling the Information Asymmetry in Used EV Deals
VINN
This brings us to the core economic reality behind the whole discussion: information asymmetry. In every market transaction throughout history, whether you are trading cattle, real estate, or used cars, whoever holds the critical information holds the power. For decades, traditional dealerships and sellers held the advantage because they knew the service history, - they knew what noises the car made when cold, and the buyer was forced to guess.
VINN
When independent, third party battery certificates enter the equation, that asymmetry evaporates. If you are standing in front of a private seller or a dealer salesperson, holding a verified report showing that the battery has degraded twelve percent more than expected for its age, you are no longer arguing about opinions or feelings. You have cold, hard mathematical data. You can say, this vehicle needs three thousand dollars off the asking price to reflect its real battery degradation, or you simply shake hands, walk away, and protect your capital.
VINN
Now flip the coin. What if you are the one selling an EV or managing a commercial fleet? Providing a certified battery report upfront is one of the smartest tactical moves a seller can make. The single biggest barrier holding back everyday buyers from purchasing a second hand electric vehicle is fear of the unknown battery. If you hand them a certified document on day one showing ninety four percent health, balanced cells, and an unblemished BMS history, you eliminate their hesitation immediately. Market evidence shows that vehicles with documented battery condition sell substantially faster and command higher residual prices because you have removed the buyer risk premium.
VINN
Fleet operators and wholesale dealerships are catching on to this reality as well. When lease returns and company fleet vehicles hit the secondary market, sorting good packs from damaged packs early protects dealer margins and eliminates post sale warranty headaches. Providing an independently verified battery warranty backed by real diagnostic data transforms what used to be a liability into a high trust selling proposition. It is good for the dealer, it is good for the fleet manager, and it protects the end consumer.
VINN
We are entering a brand new era of vehicle valuation. The old cues, like listening to an engine idle, smelling the oil, or trusting an arbitrary number on an odometer, simply will not save you in the electric age. The true condition of an EV is stored inside millions of microscopic chemical reactions under the chassis, and the only way to measure that value is with objective, transparent data. Because in this business, clarity beats confidence every single time. When both sides understand the facts, everyone walks away with a fair deal.
VINN
That is the job of the VINN Report. - Look after your mates, do your homework, and I will catch you in the next one.
